Choosing a finish

Choosing the correct finish for your project is an important decision. Common finish choices range from flat and matte all the way up to a high gloss sheen. With flat finish paint no light is reflected, while high gloss offers an elegant shine. Below you will see where other common sheen finishes rank between flat and high gloss.

Flat – no sheen – ideal for ceilings or low traffic areas
Matte – almost no sheen – washable finish
Eggshell – slight angular sheen – highly scrubbable – great for high traffic areas
Pearl / Satin – more noticeable sheen – suitable for doors, trim, cabinets – can be used on walls where maximum durability is needed
Semi-Gloss – very popular for trim, doors, shelves, furniture
High Gloss – very shiny, wet-look finish

There are some key differences in performance depending on which sheen you choose. To put it simply, flatter finishes are better at hiding imperfections while glossier sheens are more durable.

Flatter finishes hide more flaws and create a more uniform surface but are better for low-traffic areas such as ceilings because they are difficult to clean. Glossier finishes, on the other hand, are more likely to show flaws but are also more durable and clean up with ease.
